Friday, 3:40 p.m. in the last week of March 2024. My phone rang while I was checking the air dryer in our fabrication shop. A client needed twelve stainless steel A-frame brackets, cut from 1/2-inch plate, loaded and delivered by Sunday morning for a hotel lobby display. Normal lead time for a job like that? The self-contained machine has its place. So does a plasma system that can run hard all day.

I also want to be clear: I'm not saying plasma is always better than laser. Metal laser cutters are great for thin material, intricate geometry, and quick changes between small parts. If this job had been 1/8-inch aluminum with complex cutouts, I would have called the laser shop first. For 1/2-inch stainless with a Sunday deadline, plasma was the right tool.
