If you need a short answer on the Hypertherm Powermax 45 XP: yes, it is worth the money for most small fabrication shops that cut mild steel up to about 1/2 inch thick — but not because it is the cheapest plasma cutter. It is worth it because the total cost of running it has been lower than the cheaper plasma cutter it replaced.

In 2024, our shop logged roughly 220 cutting hours on the Powermax 45 XP. Our consumables spend for those hours was $1,286, including electrodes, nozzles, shields, swirl rings, and one torch cap. And if you need fine detail on thin stainless all day, a fiber laser may beat it on edge quality and speed.
