I Wasted $780 on a Hypertherm Powermax 45 – Three Scenarios That Would Have Saved Me

Whether the Hypertherm Powermax 45 is the right plasma cutter for your shop depends on one thing: what you're actually cutting. There isn't one universal answer. The plasma cutter itself is solid, but the choices around it—torch consumables, circle guides, free design files, and whether you even need a laser engraver—are where you'll save money or burn it.

I bought my Powermax 45 in 2019. Since then, I've personally wasted close to $780 on avoidable mistakes. Some came from buying the wrong "hypertherm powermax 45 tips." I still search for laser cut designs free of charge from time to time, but now I treat them as reference only. Here's what happened when I didn't:

In 2024, I found a free laser-cut metal sign SVG online. It looked perfect in the preview. I imported it to my plasma CAD program, generated a toolpath, and cut 18 pieces.   3. Did you just download free laser cut designs? Plan to redraw them for plasma. And if your project is engraving gold, ignore plasma entirely and get a fiber laser engraving machine.
